ABOUT BLUE OCTOBER

Alternative rock band Blue October was formed in Houston, Texas in 1995. The band was formed by lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Justin Furstenfeld, his brother Jeremy and multi-instrumentalist Ryan Delahoussaye and currently consists of the original trio, as well as bassist Matt Noveskey and lead guitarist Will Knaak.

CAREER

1995-1998: Early years and The Answers

Three years after the band was formed, they drew the attention of former Kid Rock manager Michael Rand when they performed at the Pappadeaux Cafe in Houston. Rand’s agency booked the band to perform over 350 shows and provided them with publicity and artist development. They were then brought by Rand to Universal Music Group CEO Doug Morris under the direction of longtime A & R Recording rep Reen Nalli.

Under the management of the Furstenfeld’s parents (who went by the name RoDan Entertainment),  Blue October released their first album, The Answers in 1998.

1999-2005: Consent to Treatment and History for Sale

In 1999, the band signed to Universal Records ahead of the release of their second studio album, Consent to Treatment, which was released on August 15, 2000. The year of the album’s release, the band was dropped from the label.

After leaving the label, the band concentrated on performing live and recruited C.B. Hudson, a new guitarist. November 2002 saw the band sign with management label Rainmaker Artists, who signed the band to their record label shortly afterward. This was followed by Matt Novesky leaving the band just before they went into the studio to record their third studio album, History for Sale. The album was released on April 8, 2003, preceded by the single "Calling You," which was released that February and found success at number 35 on the Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks chart. That May, the band performed several live showcases for  Atlantic Records, Columbia Records and Universal Records, resulting in a bidding war between the labels and, ultimately, another deal with Universal Republic Records. The label re-released History for Sale that August.

2006-2008: Foiled and commercial success

"Hate Me", the first single from the band’s fourth album, Foiled, was performed by the band on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno as their late-night television debut. That year, they also performed on  Jimmy Kimmel Live! and  Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Foiled was released on April 4, 2006 and peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200 and number eight on the Top Rock Albums chart. The album was also certified platinum in both the US and Canada. "Hate Me", which was released before the album in January, peaked at number two on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart and number 31 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, making it the band’s most commercially successful single.  "Into the Ocean", the second single from the album, was released on July 17, 2006 and reached number 10 on the Adult Top 40 chart. This was followed by "She's My Ride Home" in 2007.

The album’s release was followed by extensive touring throughout North and South America, and Europe.

2009-2010: Approaching Normal and The Ugly Side

Approaching Normal, the band’s fifth studio album, was released on March 24, 2009 and debuted at number 13 on the Billboard 200. The album was released in two versions: the ‘explicit’ version, with "The End" as the bonus track, and the ‘clean’ version, with "Graceful Dancing" as the bonus track. The band also released "Graceful Dancing" as a ‘special gift’ to fans signed up to their mailing list.

The album’s lead single, "Dirt Room," was released on December 23, 2008 and became the band’s second single to hit the top five Modern Rock Songs chart. "Say It" was released as the second single on April 24, 2009.

On May 10, 2011, Blue October released Ugly Side: An Acoustic Evening With Blue October, a live acoustic album that was recorded over a series of shows in July 2010. From March through May 2011, the band embarked on an acoustic tour.

2011-2012: Any Man in America and Up/Down Records

Any Man in America, Blue October’s sixth studio album, was released on August 16, 2011 by Justin Furstenfeld's own label Up/Down Records and was distributed through RED Distribution, a Sony Music imprint for independent artists. The album debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200, making it the highest-charting album of Blue October's career, and also peaked at number two on the Billboard Independent Albums chart and number one on the Top Rock Albums Chart.

The official music video for the first single, "The Chills", the album’s lead single, was released via the band's Vevo channel on July 25, 2011. The song peaked at number 26 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart.

2013-2015: Sway and Things We Do at Night

On August 20, 2013, Sway, Blue October’s seventh studio album, was released. The album’s first single, "Bleed Out", was released on June 17, 2013. This was followed by a second single, "Angels in Everything",  on August 10. On November 2, 2014, a music video for the track "Fear" was released to the band’s YouTube and Vevo channels.

On November 20, 2015, the band released a live DVD/album titled Things We Do at Night (Live from

Texas).

2016-2019: Home and I Hope You’re Happy

From August – November 2015, Blue October worked on their next studio album, Home, which was released on April 22, 2016. Home debuted at number one on the Rock Albums Chart, number one on the Alternative Albums Chart, number one on the Independent Albums Chart, and number 19 on the Billboard 200. Its title track was premiered on the radio on December 16, 2015 and reached the top 30 of the US Adult Pop Songs chart.

A new single, "I Hope You're Happy," was released on February 28, 2018. It was followed by an album of the same name on August 17, 2018. The album reached number 28 on the Billboard 200 and hit the top 10 of six other Billboard charts.

2020-2022: This Is What I Live For and Get Back Up

"Oh My My," Blue October’s first single in two years, was released on February 28, 2020 as the lead single from the album This Is What I Live For. This Is What I Live For was released on October 24, 2020 and peaked at number 19 on the Top Rock Albums chart.

Get Back Up, a documentary about Blue October, was released on May 21, 2020. This was supported by the This Is What I Live For Tour, which began in September 2021. In March 2022, the band toured the UK and then returned to the US to support the Goo Goo Dolls on a North American tour. A two-part double album is released in October 2022, with the second half released in March 2023.
